Your Xbox has two
major processors, the CPU and the GPU, that use up a lot of energy
during your gaming sessions. With all that power being employed to run
one console unit, plenty of heat is generated within your Xbox.
Overheating will cause your system to shut down because there are
insufficient heat sinks inside the machine to provide adequate internal
cooling for the console.
This is largely due to a design flaw in the hardware. You’ll notice 3
red lights start to flash on your Xbox when the system freezes. You can
take several measures to avoid the 3 red lights error from occurring
due to overheating.
Increase
Ventilation
The heat in your Xbox must find an escape outlet or else it’ll become
trapped inside the console. You should place your Xbox in an area where
there is free flow of air. If you’re in a warm region like Florida or
California, you may want to open the windows to increase ventilation.
Don’t play your games in a dingy room with little air flow.
Place Console
on Flat Area
As far as possible, place your console on a flat area such as a table
top or on the floor. Make sure you clear the environment surrounding
your console of any material that will prevent the heat from freely
escaping the air vents on your Xbox, such as magazines, CDs and
sweaters. Wipe the surfaces off dust before you position your console.
No Flannel or
Cushion under the Console
Your console shouldn’t be resting on any cushions or blankets. These
things tend to restrict the heat from escaping and rapidly cause your
Xbox to overheat. Any sort of cloth underneath your Xbox should be
removed immediately. These include rugs and carpets. Try to place your
console directly on a counter top, floor or other surface.
Limit Gaming
Sessions
One other avenue you could attempt to reduce overheating is to limit
the amount of time you spend gaming. Often, the primary cause of the 3
red lights error is extended periods of gaming. Your Xbox is only a
machine which requires a fair amount of rest if it is to function at
optimum levels.
You’d be well advised to allow your console to cool down for an hour or
more when you feel it’s getting too hot. Remember, overheating will
cause irreparable damage to your Xbox.
Shut Off the
Power
When you’ve finished your gaming, ensure you shut off the power. Pull
out the plugs from the sockets just to be sure. This will prevent any
possibility of the console being switched on accidentally. Turning off
power cuts the electrical supply to the unit completely and allows your
console to cool off.
Now that you know what you can do to reduce the chances of the 3 red
lights error, be sure to adopt these simple steps as a preventive
measure. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy gaming in relative peace.
And protect your Xbox 360 from serious damage.
