The Xbox
360 is currently one of the most powerful gaming consoles in the gaming
industry and since it was developed by a company that had its history
with PC gaming, the Xbox 360 hardware rivals it pretty well.
However, the Xbox 360 is pretty similar to the PC in terms of heat
generation. As powerful as the system is, the Xbox 360 requires
significant cooling to counter the high heat generation.
Of
course not everyone is immediately aware of these things. As
a result many gamers play for hours on end with no break until they see
the Xbox 360 three red lights flashing with the system not responding.
The three red lights on Xbox 360 or popularly known as “The
Red
Ring of Death” had a long history which started way back in the
earliest models of the Xbox 360. Here is a history of the known causes
including some recent ones.
Heat
Heat warnings are usually indicated if the Xbox 360 is blinking two red
lights from the ring. This is a warning sign that your system needs to
cool down before powering it back on.
If the
console gets overstressed with heating problems, it may lead to the
Xbox three
red lights indicating that one of the hardware
components is
severely damaged from the heat it generated. Heat can damage the ball
grid array solder joints of the CPU, motherboard, and the GPU which are
highly delicate especially on the older models.
Faulty
Graphics Chip
The early Xbox 360 models had graphics chips that were made to save on
budget. These early builds were very susceptible to heat causing them
to break easily. This has led Microsoft to redesign the chip in such a
way that lesser energy converts to heat.
Power
Draining from Third-party Accessories
Xbox supports a number of third-party accessories that improve the
gaming experience and counteract some of the problems it has including
the heating issues. Many of these accessories are still unlicensed due
to the lack of evidence regarding its effectiveness.
In fact these accessories can actually damage the unit since it takes
power from the Xbox 360’s power supply reducing the overall
performance. Excessive use of these accessories including the console
coolers can result in the Xbox 360 3 red lights problem.
Soldering
Issues
There have been many claims of soldering issues including cold solder
joints where the parts are joined with inadequate temperatures. The
claimed problem with some of the units is that the heat flow that is
required for proper soldering is absorbed instead by other chips like
the GPU and CPU. If the temperature falls and rises at prolonged
intervals, the problem could worsen.
Despite the many causes claimed, keeping your Xbox cool and giving it
rest occasionally is one great habit in avoiding the Xbox 360 three red
lights problem altogether.
