There
you are,
happily playing Dungeons and Dragons on your Xbox when suddenly your
screen goes black and three weird red lights stare back at you. Avid
gamers are likely to get a seizure when that happens! Those red rings
glow like amorphous eyes out of an eerie horror movie.
Your favorite toy has effectively crashed at that stage. Your console
shuts down and no matter how long you stare back, the Xbox 360 red ring
of
death simply won’t go away. Your toy appears to be dead to the outside
world.
What is the
Xbox
Ring of Death?
No less than about 30% of all Xbox owners have suffered from this
particularly virulent problem. That’s way too many gamers having faulty
consoles they’re quite ready to kick out of sheer frustration. The red
lights aren’t termed the Xbox ring of death for no apparent
reason.
Seeing these flashing lights on your screen signals a fatal error on
your machine. The most likely cause for this is overheating. You’ve
probably been playing your games so long, your machine just couldn’t
stand the pressure and collapsed under the heated strain.
Your console is a compact piece of hardware that, because of an
inadequate design, doesn’t have enough space for heat sinks to
accommodate sufficient cooling fans. Without a good cooling mechanism,
your extended gaming sessions generate so much heat that it can exceed
120 degrees Fahrenheit. That sort of temperature is just too hot for
computer parts that are sensitive.
The heat builds up quickly and pretty soon the solder joints that hold
the CPU and GPU to the motherboard crack and melt. Fragmented soldering
loosen the critical link between the motherboard and the two processing
units.
And that’s when the Xbox 360 red ring of death makes its appearance.
Your
Xbox will then crash and stay inoperable unless you take some kind of
action to revive it.
When does
this problem happen?
The short answer to that question is – anytime. You might have only
been gaming for eight straight weeks and then wham! You’re hit with the
Xbox 3 red lights scenario. Not a nice situation, if you ask me.
Some gamers experience screen freezing or glitches prior to the Xbox
360 ring of death problem, but quite a number of them don’t have any
warning before the console seizes up.
Apparently the newer Xbox models have a death ring error rate of only
6%. So, if you got your machine in the last year or so, count yourself
among the lucky few, because the Xbox 360 has been on the market for
four years and counting.
What else can
cause it to occur?
Well, now that’s a good question. Poor ventilation. Since the Xbox
console’s compressed and sleek, there isn’t adequate ventilation for
the heat to escape.
Positioning your console on a cluttered table or surrounding it with
heaps of your magazines and CDs will block the ventilation openings.
There’ll be no way for the heat to escape, and trapped heat is a
surefire way to be ultimately blinking at the Xbox 360 ring of death.
For denizens of the Xbox gaming community, your Xbox is a most precious
possession. Facing off with the Xbox 360 ring of death is a real world
possibility and not a circumstance that you’d welcome.
You need to be aware of what exactly these red rings are and what
causes them. After all, as the old saying goes, to be forewarned is to
be forearmed.
